The Road Safety Laboratory carries out studies and research on road safety and the activities on road infrastructure safety management provided for by Legislative Decree 35/2011 and EU Directives 2008/96 and 2019/1936. The laboratory's main equipment is a high-fidelity dynamic driving simulator and systems for assessing the drivers' psychophysiological status.
Among the main activities of the laboratory are:
a) Road safety plans at different territorial scales;
b) Geolocation and analysis of incidents and identification of contributing factors with advanced data mining and machine learning techniques;
c) Verification of the effectiveness of safety improvement interventions with the support of high-fidelity driving simulations;
d) Road safety assessment at network level (EU Directive 2019/1936, art. 5)
e) Safety impact assessment of road projects (Legislative Decree 35/11, art. 3);
f) Safety control of road projects (Legislative Decree 35/11, art. 4) with the support of high-fidelity driving simulations;
g) Classification of the safety of the existing road network and selection of the most cost-effective interventions (Legislative Decree 35/11, art. 5);
h) Road network safety inspections (Legislative Decree 35/11, art. 6).
