Planning and Design of Transport Systems

The Laboratory of Planning and Design of Transport Systems, located in the Via Claudio complex (building C5), extends over approximately 110 m2 . It makes use of numerous hardware and software tools, including: a computing center with multiprocessor systems and servers for web hosting and data warehousing, sensors for the automatic detection of traffic flows and road flow characteristics, software for calculation, optimization, and assignment to transport networks and for mobility demand forecasting, and software for the simulation of terminals and logistics processes.

Over the years, advanced expertise has been developed at both national and international levels, leading to numerous technical-scientific consultancies, including:

  1. drafting and evaluation of transport infrastructure projects (roads, highways, and railways) at different territorial scales (international, national, regional, and local) with reference to estimates of passenger and freight traffic as well as the assessment of internal and external impacts on the transport system;
  2. economic and financial analyses (e.g., cost–benefit, multi-criteria, Business Plan) for transport infrastructures (e.g., highways, high-speed rail lines);
  3. drafting and evaluation of feasibility studies and projects (in accordance with the provisions of the New Public Procurement Code);
  4. project review (project review) of transport at different territorial scales and the definition of priorities;
  5. design, updating, and optimization of transport services and fares (e.g., public transport lines and networks, highway tolls, and urban transport service fares);
  6. models and methods for estimating passenger and freight mobility demand with reference to mobility policies and projected trend scenarios;
  7. models and methods for estimating the impacts of ITS policies and technologies on mobility choices;
  8. effects of quality and hedonic value in public transport;
  9. land-use models and methods and transport–territory impacts;
  10. models and methods for traffic simulation (macroscopic and microscopic) both road and rail
  11. Public Engagement (Stakeholder Engagement) procedures for the selection of shared transport infrastructures
